Bloodroot: that gorgeous spring ephemeral native to the eastern US whose paper-thin petals open in the morning and close at night. It conserves energy in the most clever ways: on cloudy days, it might not even open at all. It emerges in early spring and is gone by late summer. Its name comes from the red sap produced when you cut into the roots: a color used by American Indians for dying clothes and baskets as well as for insect repellant. Due to over-harvesting Bloodroot is pretty rare and yet, in good conditions, it can spread into big colonies. I always feel very lucky to see one.
